You. Have. Got. To. Be. Kidding:
"There is a big opportunity for people to start experimenting with veal, to eat something that is extremely tasty and help solve an animal welfare problem."I officially despise the Food & Drink section of most newspapers. It's telling that the super-category here is "Enjoyment," as if titillating one's taste buds trumps the life of innocent animals. The paper, occasionally on the friendly side of animals in other sections, goes so far as to publish a recipe. It's a revolting backslide that certainly plays into the fears of activists that think welfare reforms will actually make it more acceptable to eat foods that some would have previously considered off-limits.
In this day and age, how can people continue to find the slaughter of innocents acceptable simply for the sake of anyone's baser pleasures? It's barbaric, regardless of the degree of cruelty involved. To quote Viva's campaigns director, Toni Vernelli:
Rose veal is less cruel than white veal but you are still killing a baby and eating its flesh. To try to tout it as a kind of humane meat as is hypocritical because they are still animals being slaughtered before they reach a fraction of their normal life span. And that's the bottom line. Commoditizing lives in such a crass way is inherently cruel to animals, regardless of the degree tolerated by the law. What's more, such an callous attitude toward life ultimately hardens and rots our own hearts.
Contact the paper with your opinion on this story. Don't let it go without critique. Animal-caring people cannot let veal become like fur, increasingly accepted socially once again. The stigma must remain. Note from the editors: Your letter must include your name, postal address and daytime telephone number.
