Chicago's wild foie gras chase

Posted by Eric @ 5:43 PM

Chicago Tribune

I haven't begun to dig in and see what news is current out there right now, but this story did flash across my radar screen while I was already posting today (hat tip to Farm Sanctuary), so I thought I'd address it. After all, it is everywhere today.

Yes, I think a foie gras ban opens the ethical question to other foods. No, I don't have a problem with that.

It looks like a lot of people do, though. The Tribune is running an online poll, and right now those disagreeing with the foie gras ban far outnumber those that agree. There's not much scientific about this poll -- as you can prove by following the above link to the story and voting now -- but maybe a stronger showing in favor of the ban would go some ways in the PR game.

Enforcement of the ban is pretty much non-existent in its first days, and the article describes some enthusiastic defiance. However, while the city Public Health Department had been less than enthusiastic about accepting responsibility for overseeing enforcement, spokesman Tim Hadac said the department would enforce the law beginning Wednesday. Complaints can be made through the city's 311 info line, or by e-mail from the Department of Public Health's website. The department will mail warnings to restaurants on a first offense and send inspectors with ticket books for a second complaint.

This is one area where the public can be very helpful in enforcing its city's laws.
