Proposed Dog Rule Misguided

Posted by Eric @ 1:26 PM

Breed-specific bans of animals like pitbulls have been discussed in many communities recently, which is a shame. The Intelligencer has an editorial against breed-specific bans today (excerpt):
Organizations such as the American Kennel Club, the American Veterinary Medical Association and the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals - experts in the canine field - are opposed to breed-specific bans. We agree. A dangerous dog designation should be given to a dog based on its actions, not its breed.
As with people, individuals should be each accorded its own evaluation. While breeding has created numerous animals that are more aggressive than other members of their species, damning them all for the actions of a small minority is incredibly cruel and unfair to both the animals and their companions
