British fox hunters defy ban

Posted by Eric @ 2:10 AM

A number of stories covering Monday's British fox hunt, which -- with the exception of The Guardian -- are all pretty much the same (as each other and pretty much all the previous stories covering the new Hunting Act):

The Sydney Morning Herald:
British hunters galloped through fields and forests on the year's biggest hunting day on Monday in a show of defiance at a newly introduced ban on the age-old custom of killing foxes with packs of dogs.

Organisers laid trails with the smell of fox - rather than allow dogs to chase real foxes - to avoid falling foul of the ban imposed this year by Prime Minister Tony Blair's ruling Labour Party.
Daily Herald: Hunting back under the spotlight:
the League Against Cruel Sports published an advice booklet aimed at rural people it said were suffering because of "havoc" caused by English and Welsh hunts.

The survey, carried out by ORB for the Countryside Alliance, asked - From what you know do you think the Hunting Act is working, i.e. is it preventing hunting of wild mammals with dogs?

Nearly three-fifths (59%) of the 1,004 respondents said no, 34% said yes, while 7% did not know.
BBC News: Show of support for holiday hunts:
former League Against Cruel Sports director Jim Barrington, who was among 4,000 supporters at the Beaufort Hunt in Gloucestershire, said: "I, and a number of others, have come to the conclusion that a ban is not the right way forward.

"The Hunting Act is a ridiculous piece of legislation. It is unenforceable and will cause greater animal suffering."
And so on...
